IPIC's Patent and Trademark Administrator Programs stand as the only exclusively online programs that offer a professional designation for intellectual property administrators in Canada.

Designation

A Certified Canadian Patent Administrator (CCPA) or Certified Canadian Trademark Administrator (CCTA) demonstrates the competencies required to assist a patent agent, trademark agent or lawyer practicing in IP law. Duties cover a wide range of tasks related to the administration of patents or trademarks such as:

  • Preparing patents or trademark applications;
  • Managing government fee payments;
  • Docketing critical deadlines;
  • Assisting with the administration of contentious proceedings;
  • Drafting correspondence with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO); and
  • Preparing reports and letters for clients

Certification

Certified patent and trademark administrators whose membership is in good standing with IPIC may use the post-nominal letters CCPA or CCTA next to their name, and display IPIC-issued digital credentials on social media. They also appear on the official register of Certified Canadian Patent Administrators or Certified Canadian Trademark Administrators, and gain access to exclusive continuing education programs to patent and trademark administrators.

To maintain the designation CCPA or CCTA designation, administrators must be a remain members in good standing with IPIC.

IPIC’s Certified Administrator Membership Category

IPIC offers a wide range of benefits for its members, including preferential pricing for its courses and webinars, access to publications focusing on hot-button IP issues and networking opportunities.


In 2022, IPIC introduced a more accessible membership category for Certified Administrators. This non-voting category is available to individuals who fall into one of two groups:

  • A) Candidates: Those currently enrolled in an IPIC Certification Program for patent or trademark administration
  • B) Professionals: Those who have already earned their CCPA or CCTA designation and are actively maintaining their certification
