IPIC Marks 100 Years with Centennial Plaque at the Fairmont Château Laurier

On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) marked a defining moment in its centennial year with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at Ottawa’s historic Fairmont Château Laurier.

The location holds special significance for IPIC. It was at the Château Laurier in 1926 that the organization that would become IPIC was established, bringing together members of Canada’s growing intellectual property profession. One hundred years later, IPIC returned to where its story began to commemorate a century of service, leadership and advocacy.

The plaque was unveiled in the presence of global intellectual property leaders who had gathered in Ottawa ahead of IPIC’s Centennial Conference, providing an opportunity to recognize both the Institute’s Canadian legacy and the international relationships that continue to strengthen the global IP community.

For a century, IPIC has represented and supported Canada’s intellectual property professionals while contributing to the development of the country’s IP system. Throughout that history, the Institute and its members have helped advance the profession through education, advocacy, professional collaboration and engagement with governments and IP organizations in Canada and around the world.

The centennial plaque creates a lasting connection between that history and the future. Its placement at the Château Laurier recognizes the vision of the professionals who came together there in 1926, while celebrating the generations of patent agents, trademark agents, lawyers and other IP professionals who have carried that work forward over the past 100 years.

As IPIC enters its second century, the plaque will remain at the place where the Institute’s journey began — commemorating 100 years of protecting innovation and creativity while looking ahead to the future of intellectual property in Canada and around the world.
