THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking a patent agent to lead and grow PCK’s presence in Kitchener-Waterloo. The ideal candidate will be a skilled practitioner with strong client relationship abilities and a deep understanding of the KW innovation ecosystem. This role offers significant autonomy while benefiting from the full support of our Toronto-based team.
The selected candidate will:
- Spearhead PCK’s presence in KW, managing relationships with existing clients and fostering new connections within the tech community.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to startups, scale-ups, and established tech companies, aligning PCK’s services with their IP needs.
- Engage with Communitech and the broader KW innovation ecosystem to build PCK’s brand and expand our reach.
- Handle patent drafting and prosecution before CIPO, USPTO, and WIPO.
- Lead client intake and invention disclosure sessions, ensuring a smooth and effective patent process.
- Perform patentability searches, landscape analyses, and FTO assessments.
- Contribute to business development efforts and attend industry events.
THE SKILL SET
- Registered patent agent (CPATA Class 1 or 2 preferred); applications from foreign-licensed agents with strong experience and a willingness to pursue CPATA licensing are welcome.
- Engineering, computer science, or scientific background (degree required).
- Minimum two years of experience in patent drafting and prosecution.
- Strong client relationship and interpersonal skills—able to connect with and earn the trust of KW’s innovation leaders.
- Independent, proactive, and entrepreneurial mindset, while working collaboratively with our Toronto team.
- Qualifications as a lawyer and/or trademark agent are an asset but not a requirement.
- Excellent communication and time management skills.
