This role provides the opportunity to be an instrumental part of our team and foundational member in the future of the firm.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct patentability, patent validity, and patent infringement analyses, as well as trademark clearance searches, passing off and trademark infringement analyses.
  • Assist with litigation involving patents, trademarks, and copyrights, including preparing cease and desist letters, drafting pleadings, preparing and arguing motions, assisting with examinations, negotiating settlements, attending and assisting with trials, and preparing and arguing appeals.
  • Maintain client IP portfolios, including paying maintenance fees and monitoring deadlines.
  • Work with inventors, businesses, engineers, scientists, and other professionals to provide advice on IP protection and strategy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent STEM education, experience, or training (required).
  • Experience working in a law office (preferred, but not required).
  • Member of a provincial law society (preferred, but not required).
  • Patent or trademark agent licence (preferred, but not required).
  • Juris Doctor degree or equivalent (preferred, but not required).

Compensation

  • $80,000–$200,000 per year, or more, depending on experience and qualifications. We also provide additional profit-sharing incentives based on the candidate’s year of call.

Benefits

  • On-site parking.
  • Flexible in-person or hybrid work options in Edmonton or Vancouver.
