Looking to build a sophisticated patent practice while gaining meaningful hands-on experience from day one?

The IP group at Deeth Williams Wall is looking for a motivated, detail-oriented patent associate to join our patent prosecution practice. You’ll work directly with senior partners and experienced patent agents on challenging patent matters across a range of technologies, with opportunities to draft and prosecute patent applications, manage global patent portfolios, work directly with clients, and contribute to patent strategy early in your career.

What You’ll Do

As part of our IP team, you will:

-  Draft, file and prosecute patent applications in Canada and internationally
-  Analyze and prepare opinions on patentability, validity, freedom to operate and infringement
-  Manage domestic and international patent portfolios
-  Work directly with clients to understand their technologies, businesses and strategic objectives
-  Manage multiple matters and competing deadlines with exceptional attention to detail
-  Collaborate closely with lawyers, patent agents, inventors and in-house counsel

What You Bring

You’re intellectually curious, organized and attentive to the details that matter. You’re comfortable taking ownership of your work while collaborating with experienced practitioners and clients.

You also bring:

-  Excellent technical and legal writing skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and precisely
-  Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
-  A client-focused approach and commitment to high-quality work
-  The initiative and organization to manage multiple matters and tight deadlines independently
-  An interest in working across a range of technologies and industries

Your Experience

-  2–4 years of experience at a law firm handling domestic and international patent matters
-  Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
-  A technical background in chemistry, engineering, computer science, physics, life sciences or a related discipline
-  Registration as a Class 3 Patent Agent Trainee, or an intention to register and train as a Class 3 Patent Agent Trainee
-  Patent agent registration is an asset, but not required
-  Industrial design experience is an asset, but not required

Why Deeth Williams Wall?

At Deeth Williams Wall, you’ll have the opportunity to work closely with experienced IP practitioners, take on meaningful responsibility early in your career, and develop both the technical and strategic sides of a sophisticated patent practice.

If you’re looking for a role where careful thinking, strong writing, intellectual curiosity and initiative are valued, we’d like to hear from you.
