Intermediate Patent Agent

Job Summary

Own Innovation are seeking an experienced, registered Canadian Intellectual Property lawyer and Patent Agent with a background in aerospace technology, aerospace engineering, telecommunications systems, or RF/microwave technologies to join our team. The ideal candidate will be fluent in both French and English, and will independently manage patent portfolios, draft and prosecute patent applications across multiple jurisdictions, develop and implement client IP strategies, and contribute to mentoring junior team members. This position offers collaboration with globally recognized IP experts and exposure to an international practice spanning Canada, USA, Europe, and Asia.

Key Responsibilities

Patent Drafting & Prosecution

  • Independently draft patent applications for Canadian, US, and international filings
  • Prosecute patent applications through examination to grant with minimal supervision
  • Prepare patentability, validity, and infringement opinions
  • Manage patent portfolios and develop prosecution strategies
  • Support patent commercialization including licensing and litigation matters

Client Relations & Business Development

  • Build and maintain successful client relationships
  • Develop and implement client IP strategies aligned with business objectives
  • Attend client intake meetings and invention disclosure sessions
  • Participate in business development initiatives to meet potential new clients
  • Research and write for the company website blog, as needed

Mentorship & Leadership

  • Mentor and support the development of junior patent agents and trainees
  • Contribute to firm knowledge-sharing and best practices
  • Any other tasks that may be assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a degree in aerospace engineering, aeronautical engineering, telecommunications engineering, RF/microwave engineering, or related field
  • Successful completion of a Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Laws
  • Registered Patent Agent in Canada (CPATA Class 1 license)
  • Licenced by the Law Society of Ontario (or other Canadian jurisdiction)
  • Minimum 3 years of post-qualification experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications independently
  • Demonstrated ability to manage files and client relationships with minimal supervision
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to structure information clearly, concisely, and logically
  • Client-oriented mindset with strong organization and time management skills
  • Fluent in English (written and oral)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluent in French (written and oral)
  • USPTO registration
  • Advanced degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in aerospace engineering or related field
  • Experience with aerospace, aviation, space technology, or defence patent portfolios
  • Existing client relationships or book of business
  • Experience mentoring junior patent professionals
