Job Offer: Senior Patent Agent – Expert Consultant

Status: Part-time / Freelance / Consultant

Sector: Intellectual Property (Patents & Technological Strategy)

Location: Montreal (100% Remote or Hybrid, according to your preference)

About the Opportunity

You have dedicated your career to turning scientific and technological innovations into strategic assets. Do you still enjoy the scientific rigor of patent drafting and prosecution strategy, but want to leave behind daily file management, billable hour quotas, and administrative red tape?

Our Montreal intellectual property firm is looking for an experienced retired (or semi-retired) patent agent to act as an Expert Consultant.

Whether you want to dedicate 5, 10, 20 or other hours a week to analyzing stimulating files, we adapt the workload to fit your lifestyle.

What We Offer

  •  Tailored Flexibility: Choose the mandates that interest you and set your own availability. Extended summer or winter breaks are welcome without hassle.
  • We Value Your Expertise: Work on high value-added stages: patentability opinions, complex prosecution strategies, responses to examination reports, or reviewing applications.
  • Mentorship and Guidance: Act as a mentor to our junior agents and agent trainees to share your rigor and professional reflexes.
  • Zero Administrative Burden: No client prospecting, no team management, and no heavy administrative tasks. You focus solely on intellectual matters.
  • Flexible Work Environment: Work 100% remotely from home or take advantage of our Montreal offices if you prefer an office setting.

    Key Responsibilities

Depending on your field of expertise (Engineering, Chemistry/Biotech, ICT, Physics, etc.) and your interests:

  • Draft or review legal and technical opinions (patentability, infringement, validity, freedom to operate).
  • Consult and advise on prosecution strategy for strategic patent applications in Canada, the United States (USPTO), or internationally (PCT).
  • Supervise and review drafts of patent applications or responses to examination reports prepared by junior team members.
  • Occasionally participate in brainstorming sessions on complex patent cases.

Qualifications & Profile

  • Agent Designation: Registered Patent Agent in Canada (CPATA / CABAM) and/or the United States (USPTO), with a practice that is still active or was recently placed on hold.
  • Experience: Extensive background in patent drafting and prosecution in a specific technical sector.
  • Rigor and Pedagogy: A proven passion for breaking down complex technical subjects and sharing expertise with the next generation.
  • Analytical Mindset: Ability to quickly get to the heart of an invention and a claiming strategy.

Terms and Compensation

  • Conditions: Very competitive hourly rate or flat fee per file, based on your experience.
  • Start Date: According to your availability.

    A Simple and Informal Chat

No need to send an updated multi-page resume. A simple contact by email or private message indicating your preferred technical field is enough to start a discussion over coffee (virtual or in person).
