This online training course is an in-depth, self-paced educational program intended to provide a practical grounding in Canadian industrial design practice.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Understanding the nature of an industrial design right and how it compares with other forms of intellectual property.
  • Identifying a finished article and what design portions are registrable.
  • Determining applicable filing strategies, including international application considerations.
  • Applying appropriate drawing conventions and techniques.
  • Handling most common grounds of objection in Examiner’s reports.
  • Understanding key timeframes and dates for all aspects of the industrial design lifecycle.

COURSE FORMAT 

This self-paced educational program offers four units of study materials, self-assessment quizzes (Q&A) and substantive assignments accompanied by model answers. Students will have access to an IP professional who will answer questions and provide guidance in an “Ask the Expert” format.

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE? 

Intellectual property professionals and trainees in private or corporate practice wishing to improve their knowledge of industrial design law, inventors/designers seeking to gain an understanding of IP protection for industrial designs, and individuals interested in this area of IP.
