Welcome to IPIC’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) eLearning Modules!

You spoke, we listened! The results of IPIC’s first ever Diversity, Demographic & Inclusion Survey held in 2022 revealed that Canadian IP professionals were interested in training on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI, also referred to as DEI) subjects such as Overcoming Bias. In response, IPIC has engaged the third-party service provider responsible for the survey, Global Learning Inc., to offer three (3) eLearning Modules on key EDI topics of interest.

The 3 eLearning Modules include:

Overcoming bias (20 minutes)

This course teaches participants about forms of bias in the workplace. Participants will learn what bias is, how to recognize it, and how to mitigate the negative effects of bias in the workplace.

  • Understand How We Form Biases
  • Recognize Common Types of Bias
  • Gain Awareness of How Bias Can Impact the Workplace
  • Adopt Strategies to Overcome Bias
  • Define Explicit vs. Implicit Bias
  • Understand How We Form Biases Through Our Lived Experience
  • Apply the Strategies to Overcome Bias
  • Test Your Knowledge

Fundamentals of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (20 minutes)

This course serves as an introduction to understanding the key areas of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Participants will learn DEI terminology and the importance of these DEI concepts in the workplace. This course is designed to provide foundational knowledge of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Key Concepts:

  • Terms: Diversity Equity and Inclusion
  • Equity vs. Equality
  • Equity-Deserving Groups; Women, 2SLGBTQ+, Racialized Persons, Indigenous Peoples, Persons with Disabilities.
  • History of Equity-Deserving Groups in Canada
  • Discrimination and Oppression
  • Intersectionality
  • Importance of Diversity Equity and Inclusion
  • Test Your Knowledge

Inclusive communication (20 minutes)

Inclusive Culture is an important and multi-faceted DEI principle. This course covers the concepts that are needed to achieve an inclusive culture. Participants will learn how to apply inclusive communication elements in their workplace.

  • Intent vs. Impact
  • Inclusive Language Essentials
  • Adopt a Growth Mindset
  • Micro Messages – Microaggression and Microaffirmations
  • Create a Safe Space
  • Inclusive Actions
  • Test Your Knowledge

Available in both English and French!

When all three modules are complete you will be eligible for 1 hour of CPD accreditation as follows:

Continuing Professional Development

This program is eligible for up to 1 hour Professionalism, Ethics or EDI where applicable.
