IPIC Submission for the Consultation on Review of Canada’s Geographical Indications Regime

The Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (“IPIC”) is the national association of patent agents, trademark agents and lawyers practicing in all areas of intellectual property. Our more than 1,800 members include practitioners in firms and agencies of all sizes, sole practitioners, in-house professionals, government personnel, and academics.

IPIC understands that the Government of Canada is currently reviewing its Geographical Indications (“GI”) regime to determine whether it should be expanded and is seeking stakeholder input to inform future decisions about Canada’s GI system.
This submission is responsive to this ongoing engagement on GIs, focusing on the questions raised in the Government’s 2026 Engagement Paper published online (https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/ised/sites/default/files/documents/review-gi-engagement-paper-en-final-v1.pdf).

Given the broad scope of this early engagement, IPIC does not have substantive comments on every question raised in the 2026 Engagement Paper. Instead, this submission focuses on questions that IPIC considers may affect or overlap with Canada’s broader intellectual property regime.
