IP Lawyer & Patent Agent

About our Firm
Heer Law specializes in providing intellectual property law, intellectual property litigation, patent agent and trademark agent services. We are a fast-growing boutique intellectual property law firm located in downtown Toronto. The firm has experienced strong annual revenue growth over the past 4 years and anticipates that the firm will again double over the next 3 years.

The Role
The ideal candidate will be a lawyer and registered patent agent in Canada and the United States with 2+ years of post-call experience.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing and filing United States provisional and non-provisional patent applications, regular Canadian patent applications and international patent applications in a variety of technology areas with a focus on computer-related technologies
  • Preparing and filing industrial design and design patent applications
  • Reporting and responding to office actions in patent and design applications before the USPTO and CIPO, and supervising the prosecution of related applications by foreign associates in other jurisdictions
  • Preparing patentability assessments and patent infringement and validity opinions
  • Conducting consultations with clients regarding patent, industrial design and other intellectual property issues
  • Monitoring, managing and meeting soft and hard deadlines in patent and design matters
  • Training and supervising more junior lawyers, agents, and students

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in computer engineering, computer science or a similar technical field
  • Licensed to practice as a lawyer in Ontario or another Canadian jurisdiction
  • Registration as a patent agent in Canada and the United States
  • 2+ years of post-call experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Good client management and practice management skills
  • Willingness to participate in the firm's marketing activities
  • Positive mindset and a team player
